Erie County on Thursday unveiled its plans to celebrate America’s 250th birthday this summer.
Several events will recognize Erie County’s innovators and trailblazers at several sites and museums across the region, thanks to funding provided by the county government to host sites.
The big event is on Sunday, Aug. 2, at Canalside, called “716 Celebrates: Stars, Stripes and Signers.” The party will feature live music, vendors, family-friendly activities and fireworks along Buffalo’s waterfront. The county is putting this party on with the help of Visit Buffalo.
The date in August is significant. While on July 4, 1776, the country’s independence was adopted, it was on Aug. 2, 1776, that the Continental Congress signed the engrossed parchment copy of the Declaration of Independence.
“It is not just about fireworks displays,” said Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz. “It is about educating the public on not only the history of our revolution, but the history of our country and everything that has come since.”
