BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Health officials confirmed a local case of measles in Erie County on Thursday, the first confirmed case in the area since 2018.
The Erie County Health Department said an Erie County resident tested positive for the virus on Wednesday and recently traveled to a country where measles has continued to spread for one year or more. The resident visited several locations throughout Erie County while being infectious, causing potential exposure to others on May 24 and 28.
Anyone who visited the following locations may have been exposed:
Golisano Children’s Hospital of Buffalo Emergency Department (formerly Oishei Children’s Hospital), on May 24 between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
1021 Broadway, Buffalo, on May 28 between 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
This building includes Jericho Road Community Health Center, Broadway Pediatrics, U.S. Postal Service Broadway Buffalo, UBMD Internal Medicine, Chy’s Kitchen and Catering, and the Care Management Coalition of WNY (including employees of and visitors to EPIC – Every Person Influences Children; Mental Health Advocates of WNY; Buffalo Urban League – Project Hope; Beyond Support Network; Parent Network of WNY; Project Play WNY; Self-Advocacy Association of New York State (SANYS); Center for Self Advocacy; NYS Office of People with Developmental Disabilities).
Golisano Children’s Hospital of Buffalo Emergency Department (formerly Oishei Children’s Hospital), on May 28 between 12 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Officials said the measles virus stays alive in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours. The dates and times listed above indicate a two-hour period after the resident left those areas.
Individuals are encouraged to contact their health care provider, local clinic, or emergency department before going to receive care if exposure is suspected or symptoms develop. Contacting your provider ahead of time will help facilities minimize further exposure.
Symptoms include a fever, cough, pink and watery eyes, runny nose, or a rash, appearing 10-12 days after exposure.
