A recent message has come out from the Erie Humane Society which has announced that Executive Director Joe Lang will step down from his position effective July 19.
Lang recently informed the organization’s Board of Directors of his decision to leave the role. In a statement, the board thanked him for his leadership and contributions during what it described as a period of significant change and challenge for the 134-year-old organization.
The board also expressed appreciation for the advance notice provided by Lang, saying it will help ensure a smooth and thoughtful transition.
The Erie Humane Society’s Board of Directors is actively working to identify an interim executive director, and stated updates will be shared as decisions are made.
During the transition, the organization stated that its priorities remain unchanged, including supporting shelter animals, caring for staff members, serving the community, and ensuring the long-term stability and success of the Erie Humane Society.
Board members also acknowledged the important role played by supporters of the organization, including volunteers, donors, foster families, and advocates.
The organization said the continued support of the community remains essential to carrying out its mission and helping animals in need throughout the Erie region.
Erie News Now has reached out to Joe, and he stated that he still plans to stay involved with the shelter through volunteering and fostering.

“We thank Joe for his leadership and contributions to the Erie Humane Society during what’s been a period of change and challenges for our 134-year-old organization,” said EHS Board President Jennifer Gornall. “We also appreciate that he’s provided us with enough time before his departure to help ensure a seamless transition.”
Lang joined EHS in July of 2025, after holding the role of Development Director for Lakeshore Community Services.
