It’s been a rather impressive season for certain teams around Major League Baseball, as some have played much better than they historically do. One of those squads is the Pittsburgh Pirates, sitting at 34-29 and 7-3 over their last 10 games.

It’s not fair to say that the Pirates have been great, but for an organization that’s struggled a lot over the past few decades, there’s a lot to be excited about.

The Pirates finally made the necessary offseason moves to ensure they have a chance to win at a high level, and one of those decisions was to bring in Brandon Lowe. Lowe, who has done nothing but swing it at a high level throughout a lot of his career, has been excellent this season in Pittsburgh. He already has 15 home runs and a 139 OPS+.

Unfortunately, he’s set to hit the free agency market this offseason, and he’s likely going to get a nice little deal for himself at just 31 years old. The Pirates need to be the team that pays him if they’re serious about winning, but there’s now a report suggesting that they could look to move on from him at the trade deadline, and that would perhaps be the most disappointing thing that the Pirates did in a very long time.

“Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Brandon Lowe is off to a great start for the Buccos in 2026. Lowe, 31, has a .878 OPS and 15 homers in 55 games, which are elite offensive numbers for his position.

“Usually the Tampa Bay Rays know something we don’t, but in this case trading Lowe may have been a mistake. Lowe is playing on a $11.5 million club option and will be a free agent after the season. The Pirates are 33-28 and in second place in the NL Central, 5.5 games back of the Milwaukee Brewers. They currently have a real shot to grab an NL Wild Card spot. Regardless, executives and scouts believe the Pirates will ship Lowe out at the deadline,” Pat Ragazzo reported.

If Pittsburgh actually looks to move on from him and makes a deal, this should be viewed as a major problem in Major League Baseball. This is not only a team with a chance to compete for a playoff spot, but a young squad that needs as much help as it can get offensively.

Moving on from Lowe would be an absolute disaster and, frankly, an embarrassment to the fans who are finally enjoying some success out in Pittsburgh.
