For the seventh time in franchise history, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders threw a no-hitter.
Brendan Beck and Carson Coleman combined to no-hit the Syracuse Mets, 4-0, on Friday night at NBT Bank Stadium in New York.
It is the RailRiders’ first no-hitter since Aug. 19, 2021, when Sean Boyle threw a seven-inning one in the second game of a doubleheader at Worcester. It is the third nine-inning no-hitter — Jeremy Cummings pitched one Sept. 3, 2006, at Rochester, while Luis Gil, Reggie McClain and Stephen Ridings combined for one July 21, 2021, also against Rochester.
The other three were seven-inning no-hitters by Red Barons pitchers: Ben Rivera on July 25, 1992, against Pawtucket; Tyler Green on July 4, 1993, against Ottawa; and Robert Ellis on June 6, 2004, against Louisville. Robert Ellis is the father of current RailRider Duke Ellis, who had a triple, home run and two RBIs in Friday night’s game.
Beck, the New York Yankees’ No. 21 prospect, went seven innings, walked three and struck out six. He threw 93 pitches, 63 for strikes.
He issued a one-out walk to Jorge Polanco in the bottom of the first inning, then retired the next 10 batters before walking Christian Arroyo with two outs in the fourth. But Beck got Andy Ibanez to pop out to first baseman Seth Brown to end the inning. After a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth, he issued a leadoff walk to Matt Rudick in the sixth, but retired the next three batters. Beck then pitched a perfect seventh inning, ending his outing with a strikeout of Yonny Hernandez.
Coleman relieved in the bottom of the eighth and fanned the final two batters to close out a perfect inning. After retiring the first batter in the bottom of the ninth, Nick Morabito, on a groundout, Coleman walked Polanco. But Kevin Parada grounded Coleman’s first pitch to him to shortstop George Lombard Jr., who flipped to second baseman Jonathan Ornelas, who threw to Brown at first for the game-ending 6-4-3 double play.
Abraham Gutierrez, in his first game with the RailRiders after being promoted earlier Friday from Double-A Somerset, was the catcher.
In the top of the second inning, the RailRiders (31-29) got all the offense they needed, scoring twice against Syracuse starter Jack Wenninger. Oswaldo Cabrera led off with a single, Tyler Hardman reached on an error and Seth Brown walked to load the bases. Kenedy Corona grounded into a double play with Cabrera scoring. Ellis then tripled to right-center field to score Hardman and make it 2-0.
Leading off the top of the fifth, Ellis hit a 1-0 pitch from Wenninger out to left-center field for his second home run of the season and a 3-0 RailRiders lead.
Ornelas led off the top of the eighth with a home run to left-center field on a 1-1 pitch from Mets reliever Adbert Alzolay to close out the scoring. It was Ornelas’ fifth home run of the season.
Outfielder Jasson Dominguez began a rehab assignment Friday with the RailRiders and was 0 for 4 with one strikeout. While playing for the Yankees, Dominguez suffered a left shoulder AC joint sprain when he crashed into the wall making a catch in left field May 7 at Yankee Stadium against the Texas Rangers.
The series is scheduled to continue Saturday at 6:35 p.m. Righthander Adam Kloffenstein (2-3, 4.97) goes for the RailRiders against Syracuse righty Jack Weisenburger (0-2, 6.75).
Yankees option Escarra
After Friday’s game against the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees optioned catcher J.C. Escarra to the RailRiders, and promoted catcher Ali Sanchez.
In 22 games and 62 at-bats with the Yankees, Escarra is hitting .177 with a .493 OPS. Sanchez is hitting .227 with a .702 OPS in 40 games and 128 at-bats with the RailRiders.
