Kayakers shot at on Lehigh River in Northampton County near D&L Trail

Police shut down a portion of the D&L Trail in Northampton County on Saturday after kayakers reported they were shot at while on the Lehigh River, according to authorities.

The kayakers reported being shot at along the river near Wilson Avenue in Bethlehem Township from the Lower Saucon Township side of the river about 4:50 p.m., according to Bethlehem Township police Capt. Shaun Powell. The kayakers got out of the river onto the banks on the Bethlehem Township side, he said.

Lower Saucon police found evidence of a shooter or shooters on their side, the captain said. The departments are investigating the incident jointly.

Bethlehem Township police limited access to the trail and the two Wilson Avenue trailheads until later that night, after the thunderstorm passed, the captain said. Bethlehem Township Volunteer Fire Co. helped with the closure.
