Judith Ann (Gemmell) Mechler
OBITUARY
Judith Ann (Gemmell) Mechler, age 93, of Scranton, PA passed away on May 29, 2026. Judy was born June 12, 1932 in Scranton, PA to Thomas and Anna Gemmel. She lived her entire life in Scranton, PA and loved the city and her neighbors in it.
Judy married Frank Harold Mechler on Sept. 6, 1958 in the Petersburg Presbyterian Church in Scranton. They had two children, Thomas and Melissa. Frank and Judy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends in September 2008.
Judy served as a church elder, church secretary, and choir member for many years for the Petersburg Presbyterian Church in Scranton, and most recently was a member of the Hickory Street Presbyterian Church.
Judy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She loved to spoil her children and grandchildren with toys and books. She was an accomplished musician, playing piano, singing, and attending concerts. Her hobbies were reading, knitting, tai chi, baking, and visiting with her younger sister, extended family, and friends. She loved her annual family vacation to Ocean City, NJ. She enjoyed visiting her three grandchildren in Vermont and spending time with her two grandchildren in Pennsylvania. Judy will be remembered as a kind and loving soul.
Even while she suffered from dementia in her most recent years, she remained sweet and was dearly loved by the staff at Scranton Heathcare Center. Especially Donna and Hope who cared for Judy like she was their own mother. We would also like to thank Hospice of the Sacred Heart for supporting her daughter Melissa and Judy during this difficult time. Her friend Adrienne Walsh was especially kind, and wrote Judy several letters a week for the last 12 years she was in the nursing home. Their friendship was cherished by Judy for over 53 years.
She is survived by her son, Thomas Mechler, his wife, Jeanne, and their children Scott, Jack and Anna and her daughter Melissa Mechler Perry and her husband Matt and her children Anthony and Nicholas. Judy also has two great-grandchildren, Violet and Harold Mechler and another on the way. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Mechler, and sister, Carol Gemmell.
