Penn State student killed in South Philadelphia shooting after apparent robbery

A 22-year-old Penn State student was shot and killed after an apparent robbery as he walked home in South Philadelphia. The shooting happened just before 2 a.m. Homicide investigators are reviewing surveillance video that captured Billy Schmidt’s final moments before the shooting. Video from a neighbor’s porch camera shows two young men speaking with Schmidt, who is off camera. Seconds later, Schmidt appears to follow them into the street. The video also captured Schmidt saying “give me back my phone.” Moments later, a gunshot can be heard. EMTs rushed Schmidt to the hospital but he didn’t survive. “Over a phone, it’s abhorrent. It’s just unbelievable that someone would kill someone over a phone,” said neighbor Ezra Roulinavage. According to his family, Schmidt was preparing to enter his senior year at Penn State World Campus, where he was studying communications. Penn State released a statement on Schmidt’s passing, saying school leadership is heartbroken to learn about the incident and they share the deepest condolences with his family and friends.
