MOUNT PENN, Pa. – From one officer and department to another — an artistic effort to honor those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
“Jonny Castro is a sworn officer with the city of Philadelphia Police Department. He’s also an Army veteran, he’s nationally known as a forensic artist,” said Det. Joseph Taimanglo of the Central Berks Police Department.
A portrait of fallen Central Berks Police Officer Kristen Yeager, killed in a crash while responding to a call to assist another department last month, now is on display next to her desk, which is filled with flowers.
“He has an Etsy page where he sells some of his other artwork that funds 100% of this project to provide portraits of the fallen,” Taimanglo said.
This portrait is the latest in a long line of mementos that the Central Berks Police Department has received to honor fallen Officer Yeager ahead of her funeral.
“The officers were extremely grateful. As soon as they opened it they put it right on display. I know her family was in contact with Jonny they were aware that a portrait was coming,” Taimanglo said.
>Her story of sacrifice is one that’s spreading.
“Getting letters of condolence from police departments all over the country. I know has had an impact on the officers here,” said Taimanglo.
Community fundraisers have been popping up to support her family, but first — the department and community are preparing to say goodbye on Tuesday.
“We all just preparing for a tough day,” said Taimanglo.
An End of Watch ceremony will be held at Don Thomas Stadium at Exeter Township Senior High School at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday. Gates open at 11:00 a.m..
