BREINIGSVILLE, Pa. – The Pennsylvania State Police Troop M – Fogelsville are conducting a Driving Under the Influence checkpoint that will be conducted between Friday, June 12 and Sunday, June 14 within Lehigh County.
A sobriety checkpoint is a traffic safety checkpoint where troopers systematically stop vehicles at selected locations to briefly observe drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment, according to a news release from state police.
State police say the goal of a sobriety checkpoint is to reduce the number of alcohol and drug related fatal and serious crashes, and to reduce the number of DUI drivers on Pennsylvania’s highways.
The sobriety checkpoint will help achieve the goal of maintaining a safe environment for the public, state police said.
Pennsylvania law says any driver who willfully fails or refuses to bring their vehicle to a stop, or who otherwise flees or attempts to elude a pursuing police officer, can be charged with a third-degree felony.
MIf convicted, people face a maximum sentence of seven years in prison, a $15,000 fine, and restitution for damages and/or injuries sustained as a result of the pursuit.
