Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Darius Slay is being floated as a trade option ahead of the trade deadline on November 4.

Brooke Pryor of ESPN floated Slay’s name as a trade option for teams after he has struggled with the Steelers and his role appears to be diminishing rather quickly.

“He was part of the Steelers’ secondary overhaul in the offseason, but he hasn’t panned out. Slay, who won a Super Bowl with the Eagles a year ago, has been a significant part of recurring issues like missed tackles, miscommunication and being out of position. Against the Packers this past Sunday, Slay was replaced by Brandin Echols at times in the second half,” Pryor wrote.

Slay played in a season-low 50 percent of the snaps as fellow cornerback Brandin Echols sapped into his playing time.

Slay has struggled mightily this season, and after allowing Packers wide receiver Savion Williams to run right by him for a touchdown on Sunday, he was yanked from the game moving forward.

Head coach Mike Tomlin says it was all because Echols has played well and deserves it, so they were rolling through a rotation rather than giving Slay the full complement of plays he would otherwise have.

“Just playing. We were rolling guys. Echols has been good for us and is deserving to play. We played him some,” Tomlin said.

On Wednesday, Slay acknowledged that he had not been playing up to his standards, and revealed he battled a ‘tight calf’ on Sunday against the Packers. That helped lead to a dramatic reduction in his workload that may continue moving forward.
