ARDMORE, Pa. (WPHL) — Parents, students, and school leaders gathered to discuss a proposed district technology policy that officials say would provide clearer guidelines on how students use school-issued devices, as well as how that use would be monitored and restricted.

School board president Dr. Kerry Sautner stated, “We need to come up with reasonable expectations that we can understand with the best science.”

The discussion comes after months of concern from parents regarding students in grades 5 through 12 being allowed to take devices home. Many parents have questioned the amount of screen time students are exposed to and whether enough safeguards are in place to monitor device usage outside the classroom.

The issue has sparked growing community involvement, including a petition supporting the “Screens Down, Pencils Up” initiative. Those who support the movement are asking school leaders to consider what research says the impact of relying on technology in the classroom can be. They also argue that devices should serve as educational tools rather than replace traditional teaching methods.

While some parents oppose technology use altogether, others say they are not against digital learning but want students to have the option to opt out. Several parents expressed interest in having the option to opt out of district-issued devices for their children.

One parent stated, “If it’s not working for our kid, leave an option there for the kids who can’t responsibly use the device to be the best student they can be.”

School board members acknowledged those concerns but noted that implementing an opt-out option could present logistical and educational challenges for the district.

“We are not set up in our district to be able to provide individualized learning plans for students that do not have access to computers,” said school board member Anna Shurak.

District leaders say they are continuing to review potential policy changes and hope to have updates finalized before the start of the new school year.
