Art and horticulture will sprout in Nay Aug Park as Everhart in Bloom Week leads up to the Electric City Flower Show on Saturday, June 20.
The centerpiece of the week is the free fifth annual Electric City Flower Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year the show is moving from another part of the park to the grounds of the Everhart Museum within Nay Aug Park.
Gardeners of all ages have until Wednesday to sign up for free to compete in 12 categories, a few less than last year. Submission in the photography categories is closed.
A series of events and exhibitions come with the show.
“Art in Bloom” will be on display in the Museum from Wednesday through Sunday. This exhibition will pair works from the Museum’s collection with original floral interpretations.
On Thursday, June 18, from 6 to 9 p.m., the adult arts and crafts series Crafty Hour returns with Craft & Bloom: An Evening Garden Experience. The cost is $20 for Everhart members and $25 for nonmembers.
Guests will visit hands-on creative stations inspired by regional painter and silkscreen artist Jon Carsman. The centerpiece is “Wishes in Bloom.” Crafters will fold an origami lotus, write a personal wish, and set it afloat on the Everhart pond. The evening’s music will be by the DJ duo Cowgirl Pills.
On Friday, June 19, the Everhart brings back the Flower Power Happy Hour on the Museum’s front lawn from 5 to 8 p.m. This event will feature drinks by Groove Brewing, food by Harvest Seasonal Grill, and live music by Marko Marcinko’s Latin Jazz Quintet. Admission is $15 with pre-registration, $20 at the door, and includes one free drink ticket, after which there will be a cash bar. It is a 21-plus event.
Winners of Scranton Tomorrow’s Downtown Scranton Business Class Floral Competition will be announced at the happy hour and on display at the flower show. Entries had to include a red, white and blue element.
For the main event, Saturday’s flower show, the grounds open at 10 a.m., but the floral exhibits open to the public at noon. Categories include single stems of roses and other flowers, a category for America 250 arrangements, table centerpieces, mason jar posies and other displays. Children can enter their own competition for some categories. A few design-focused categories allow the use of store-bought flowers.
In addition to the floral displays, dozens of vendors with products fitting for a flower show, plus food, will set up on the lawn and farther into the park.
“They will be selling all of their handmade goods,” said Camille Dantone, a flower show volunteer and the museum’s director of education. “They are not AI influenced. They are handmade by local artisans themselves,” she said.
