One of the Erie School District‘s two assistant superintendents is retiring.
Teresa Szumigala‘s retirement was announced June 11 and is effective July 1.
Szumigala declined comment about her departure from the city’s public school district, which has 16 schools and about 10,000 students.
Teresa Szumigala is leaving the district after more than three decades. She most recently has served as an asssistant superintendent.
The district issued a statement saying it was “incredibly honored to celebrate Mrs. Szumigala and her legacy, which will continue to impact staff, students and families.”
Szumigala has been with the district for 31 years and taught a variety of grade levels before becoming an administrator at Diehl, Joanna Connell and Grover Cleveland elementary schools and at Roosevelt Middle School. She was named executive director of human resources in 2016 and assistant superintendent in 2020.

Jay Breneman, president of the Erie School Board, issued a statement saying: “On behalf of the Board of School Directors, I want to thank Mrs. Szumigala for her 31 years of dedicated service to Erie’s public schools. Her commitment to students, staff and families has helped shape this district for more than three decades, and (we) wish her nothing but success and happiness in retirement.”
The district didn’t comment on finding a replacement for Szumigala, who was one of three finalists in 2025 for the job of Erie schools superintendent. Natalyn Gibbs, an educator from Tennessee, was chosen for the role.
