PITTSTON TWP., LUZERNE CO. (WOLF) — The annual Pittston Township Volunteer Fire Department Picnic kicked off Wednesday, offering food, games, drinks and live entertainment through Sunday.
This year’s picnic includes new attractions, including a petting zoo with pony rides and an expanded beer tent area with games, along with fresh food and music.
Jordan Consagra, president of the Pittston Township Volunteer Fire Department, said the picnic gives firefighters a chance to meet residents in a relaxed setting instead of only seeing them during emergencies.
“The most important thing about having events like this, in my opinion, is obviously raising money for the fire department. But my true goal is that I want our residents and the surrounding community to know their firefighters. I think that’s extremely important. It’s one thing to hold an event, but it’s another thing to be out there face to face with residents so they can get to know you on a personal level,” said Consagra.
Consagra added that proceeds from the picnic support the department’s needs, including tools and rescue equipment, fuel, and other day-to-day costs that help keep the volunteer fire department operating.
The picnic’s entertainment schedule lists Mike Elward (Wednesday, 6 to 10 p.m.), Triple Fret (Thursday, 6 to 10 p.m.), Taxmen (Friday, 6 to 10 p.m.), Mixed Up (Saturday, 6 to 10 p.m.) and Press Play (Sunday, 5 to 9 p.m.).
An emergency services parade is planned for Friday evening, and a fireworks show is scheduled for Saturday at dusk, with a rain date of Sunday at dusk.
Food options include firehouse-cooked items and classic carnival fare. The menu features homemade potato pancakes, wings, sausage and peppers, mozzarella sticks, chicken tenders and fries, along with treats like cotton candy, popcorn and candy apples.
The picnic also includes bingo each night from 6 to 9 p.m., along with a 50/50 raffle.
The Pittston Township Volunteer Fire Department Picnic continues through Sunday at 79 Bryden Street. For more information, visit the Pittston Township Volunteer Fire Department Picnic Facebook page.
