ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Allentown City Council forwarded legislation to pay for a traffic improvement project Wednesday night at city hall.
The city will transfer nearly $1.7 million to fund the American Parkway traffic signal improvement project. The project will complete the installation of a traffic adaptive system along American Parkway and Basin Street, from Susquehanna Street to Airport Road.
Allentown was awarded $1.38 million through the Green Light-Go grant program and will be reimbursed once the work is complete.
At the March 5 City Council meeting, the legislative body awarded the traffic signal improvement project contract for the project to Telco for $1.67 million.
The work involves adding 11 intersections to the city’s existing traffic signal system and improving pedestrian accommodations. The 11 intersections involve:
American Parkway and Airport Road.
American Parkway and Irving Street.
American Parkway and IronPigs Way/St. Luke’s Way.
American Parkway and North Bradford Street.
American Parkway and Front Street.
American Parkway and Sumner Avenue/Ridge Avenue.
American Parkway and Gordon Street.
American Parkway and Linden Street.
American Parkway/Third Street and Hamilton Street.
Third Street and Union Street.
Basin Street and Auburn Street.
Wednesday night’s action referred the legislation to the public works committee.
In a separate bill, the legislative body advanced legislation to provide for “low-cost temporary safety improvement projects.” They include installing speed cushions, roundabouts and line painting at “key locations” throughout the city.
City contracts
City Council authorized four cooperative contracts involving various operational areas.
Two deals, with Miller Flooring, involve basketball courts at Stevens Park and Roosevelt Park for $75,369.
Another involves turnout gear for new fire cadet recruits with Witmer Public Safety Group, at a $59,816 value.
The final contract will allow the city to buy a 35-ton lowboy trailer from Stephenson Equipment for $104,195.95.
