EASTON, Pa. – Juneteenth celebrations are taking shape across our region, and one local nonprofit is playing a key role in making sure the holiday’s history remains front and center.
69 News Reporter Sydney Kay was in Easton with a look into what’s planned this week.
Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated on June 19, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, the Juneteenth Lehigh Valley website says.
The website says it marks the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and all slaves were free.
This year’s Juneteenth Lehigh Valley events are taking place from June 13 to the 20.
Dr. Karen Britt, President of Juneteenth Lehigh Valley, said the holiday is about understanding authentic American history. When we have freedom for everyone, everyone can join in and celebrate, she said.
She said her organization has three pillars: elevate, celebrate, and educate. Juneteenth Lehigh Valley awards educational scholarships to graduating seniors.
This is the 6th year the group has been putting Juneteenth events together.
On Friday night, it is Juneteenth with the IronPigs at Coca-Cola Park. It’s the organization’s third year as the event sponsor. 69 News Anchor Jaciel Cordoba will be throwing out the first pitch at the event, which will feature fireworks.
“It’s a wonderful family event,” Britt said.
Juneteenth Lehigh Valley will be holding a Juneteenth parade Saturday at noon. The parade will flow right into Riverside Park on Larry Holmes Drive, where a music festival will take place at the amphitheater.
Britt said the festival will feature bands, DJ, dancing, and about 35 vendors.
The festival will also feature jewelry and artwork.
