SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — The City of Scranton and the union representing the city’s firefighters have reached an agreement to extend their current labor contract by two years.

Under legislation scheduled to be introduced at the Scranton City Council meeting on June 16, the contract between the city and Local Union No. 60 of the International Association of Firefighters, AFL-CIO, will be extended through Dec. 31, 2028. The existing agreement was set to expire at the end of 2026.

According to city officials, members of IAFF Local 60 approved the memorandum of agreement through a union vote.

The extension includes base wage increases of 3% in both 2027 and 2028.

Mayor Paige Cognetti praised the Scranton Fire Department and its members following the agreement.

“The Scranton Fire Department is always ready to protect lives and property, and their skill is second to none,” Cognetti said in a statement. “We appreciate their bravery, hard work and preparation. They are a key reason that more and more people are investing in Scranton.”

The agreement marks the latest labor deal reached by the city this year. In March, Scranton finalized a contract agreement with Local Lodge 2305 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, the union representing Department of Public Works employees.

If approved by City Council, the extension will provide labor stability for the Scranton Fire Department through the end of 2028.
