Local kids are headed to the southern part of the country for the annual Urban Erie Community Development Corporation’s Walking in Black History Tour.

The tour is an initiative to immerse Erie area children in Black American history by visiting several major sites in Alabama including Selma, Montgomery and Birmingham.

The goal is to not only teach them about American history, but to also encourage values such as bravery, resilience and confidence.

“I think it’s important because you want to learn more about your roots and your culture and the type of things that happened to you in the past,” said Zadell Silva.

“I’m excited to see the 16th Street Baptist Church. I like all the painted glass,” said Lincoln Dickerson.

In addition to visiting historical monuments, the kids will also get to see a parade on Juneteenth.
