An 11-year-old e-bike rider was seriously injured when he collided with a car Thursday morning in Clarks Summit, according to Clarks Summit police chief Christopher Yarns.
The incident took place near the intersection of Earl Street and Harwood Avenue just after 10 a.m., Yarns said.
The driver of the vehicle was distraught and couldn’t provide a full statement to police, the chief said. The investigation is ongoing
.The juvenile was riding with several other juvenile e-bike riders, who left the scene and who police are trying to locate, with help from family members.
He was taken to Geisinger Community Medical Center and is expected to be transported to another facility for specialized treatment this afternoon.
A state police reconstruction team was called to the scene and is investigating, along with local police.
Yarns reminded the public that it is illegal to operate an e-bike on a public road if you are under 16. Those 16 and over who are operating the bikes are required to comply with all traffic laws.
Yarns said his officers have been issuing warnings followed by citations.
“It’s not only about the ticket, it’s about getting the message out to the community regarding regulations about e-bikes,” he said.
