The Standard Theatre Company invites audiences down the rabbit hole with “Wonderland,” the contemporary musical by acclaimed composer Frank Wildhorn, lyricist Jack Murphy, and book writers Jack Murphy and Gregory Boyd. Featuring a cast of emerging artists ages 13–22, this production reimagines Lewis Carroll’s beloved characters through a modern lens, blending fantasy, contemporary storytelling, and a dynamic pop-rock score.

Wildhorn is best known for composing Broadway favorites, including “Jekyll & Hyde” and “Bonnie & Clyde,” and his signature theatrical style is on full display in “Wonderland.” Audiences can expect soaring contemporary musical numbers, powerful vocals, and an emotionally resonant story that extends far beyond the familiar children’s tale.

Inspired by the world of “Alice in Wonderland,” the musical follows a modern woman who finds herself unexpectedly transported to a strange and unpredictable world where nothing is quite as it seems. Along the way, she encounters familiar characters in entirely new ways, confronting questions about identity, purpose, and finding the courage to reclaim her own story.

While audiences will recognize the whimsical world and beloved characters, “Wonderland” is far more than traditional family entertainment. Through its contemporary themes, sophisticated score, and emotional depth, the musical explores self-discovery, resilience, and learning how to navigate life’s uncertainties when everything around you seems to be changing.

For Director Michael Marone, those themes are what make the piece especially meaningful.

“Wonderland asks questions that every person eventually faces,” said Marone. “Who am I? Where do I belong? How do I stay true to myself when everything around me is changing? Beneath the whimsy and imagination is a story about self-discovery and courage. It’s a piece that allows our young performers to stretch creatively while exploring ideas that are deeply relevant to their own lives.”

The production is the culmination of an intensive summer creative process in which cast members have explored character development, ensemble storytelling, movement, and performance techniques while working alongside The Standard’s team of professional theatre artists and educators.

At the heart of The Standard Theatre Company’s approach is the belief that young artists are capable of creating meaningful, bold, and sophisticated work. Rather than simplifying the creative process, participants are challenged to engage in the same collaborative practices used in professional theatre, developing both their artistry and their confidence as storytellers.

“We want our artists to leave with more than a role on a résumé,” Marone added. “We want them to leave with stronger artistic skills and a deeper understanding of what it means to create something as an ensemble. Theatre has the power to transform how we see ourselves and each other, and that’s what we’re striving to build here.”

“At its core, ‘Wonderland’ is a celebration of curiosity — the willingness to ask questions, challenge expectations, and step boldly into the unknown. What a wonderful way to connect with and challenge the youth of our community while creating a theatrical experience that audiences of all ages can enjoy.”
