The city of Scranton and its firefighters’ union agreed to a two-year contract extension with 3% base wage increases in each of 2027 and 2028, the mayor announced.
The current five-year contract with the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 60 was set to expire at the end of 2026. The extension, which is pending before Scranton City Council for approval, would reset the expiration date to Dec. 31, 2028.
“SFD is always ready to protect lives and property, and their skill is second to none,” Scranton Mayor Paige Gebhardt Cognetti said in a statement Tuesday. “We appreciate SFD’s bravery, hard work, and preparation. They are a key reason that more and more people are investing in Scranton.”
The firefighters’ contract-extension agreement coming over six months before the labor contract was set to expire contrasts with the protracted negotiations between the administration and the Department of Public Works employee union, Local Lodge 2305 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, AFL-CIO. Those negotiations took over a year to resolve after the prior contract expiration, and a new DPW contract finally was reached in March.
The firefighters’ union contract extension went before council Tuesday night in the form of a resolution for council approval.
Council voted 5-0 — with council President Tom Schuster, Patrick Flynn, Mark McAndrew, Sean McAndrew and Jessica Rothchild all in favor — to introduce the resolution. The legislation likely would come back before council next week for an adoption vote on second reading.
