Five adults were arrested, four juveniles were cited, and law enforcement officers were on the scene for nearly three hours after large crowds and multiple altercations were reported in Pittsburgh’s Market Square Friday night. Pittsburgh Public Safety officials said just after 9:15 p.m., a large fight involving at least 40 to 50 teens broke out in front of the Chipotle in Market Square. Police used pepper spray in an attempt to break up the crowd. Safety officials said four officers were treated for exposure to OC spray. Several hundred teens were estimated to be in the area at the time of the fight. Pittsburgh Public Safety said in addition to the incident, Zone 1 and 2 officers broke up fights amongst large groups of juveniles throughout the evening. “Due to escalating violence, assaults on police officers, and the confiscation of firearms, a decision was made to clear Market Square,” PPS said. “The crowd eventually dissipated at 12:15 a.m., though many juveniles congregated at Triangle Square and a bus stop at Forbes and Wood St., where Port Authority Police continued to break up fights.”Authorities said as a result, three firearms were recovered, five adults were arrested and charged, and four teens were cited. Police said the five adults arrested face charges including aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. The teens were cited for disorderly conduct.
