UTICA, N.Y. — The Utica Comets picked up their first win of the season Saturday night, while handing the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins their first road loss.

Utica scored two power-play goals, adding one in each period as the Comets got the 3-1 win Saturday night at the Adirondack Bank Center.

It was the Comets’ first win, improving to 1-6-1, while the Penguins dropped to 8-2.

Utica opened up a 2-0 lead in the second period on Angus Crookshank’s third goal of the year, and Mike Hardman’s power-play score three minutes into the second period.

The Penguins got on the board at the end of the second as Aidan McDonough scored on Danton Heinen’s assist at the 18:39 mark of the period.

But Utica put it away with 21 seconds left as Jonathan Gruden got an empty-netter on a power play to set the final score. Sergei Murashov stopped 17 of 19 shots for WBS.

The Penguins have three games next week, hosting Toronto on Wednesday and Utica on Saturday, while traveling to Rochester on Friday.
