EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – Tuesday night was the first reading for an ordinance amendment that would require you to pay to park at city hall in Eau Claire.
The proposed amendment would require visitors parking in the city hall lot to pay $1 an hour from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Monday to Friday and 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays.
City leaders acknowledge council meetings may run long, so the rule wouldn’t be enforced during that time.
The amendment also includes eliminating block face parking. The Eau Claire Parking Administrator says block face parking has been around for five to six years in the city.
This type of enforcement means after you have parked for free for two hours or less once per calendar day, your vehicle must be moved to another block.
If this amendment were to pass, you’d no longer have to move your vehicle after two hours.
That’s because instead, you pay to stay.
As we’ve reported, the new paid parking system is set to begin downtown August 1. So, you can stay in the same spot for hours if you pay to park in that spot.
The second reading of the ordinance amendment and vote is scheduled to go before city council July 7.
If approved, it will take effect on August 1.
