With the Senior American Legion postseason roughly two weeks away, it’s time for another check-in with the seven local teams that feature players from Pioneer Athletic Conference schools. First, a look at the Wednesday night scoreboard, followed by a look at where the area’s idle teams stand with the playoffs on the horizon:
Region 2 (Berks County League)
West Lawn 15, Norchester 9
The Norchester Bulldogs, fielding a majority of its roster from Owen J. Roberts, jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning that turned out to be short-lived. West Lawn responded with two runs in the first and three more in the second before a backbreaking eight-run fourth blew the game open.
The Bulldogs (5-6 overall) had plenty of contributors offensively. Brayden Hott reached base all four times during a 3-for-3, two-RBI day at the plate, while Matt Smola chipped in two hits, RBI and runs scored apiece in the loss. Cole Locklear also plated a pair of runs for Norchester, which lost for the third time in its past four contests. Tyler Nau went 1-for-4 at the dish with an RBI, and Nick Marino chipped in a hit, a stolen base and two runs.
Things did not go as swimmingly on the bound for Norchester, with starter Lucas Campbell and first reliever Smola yielding 10 earned runs, nine hits and six walks in 3.1 innings. Hott and John Ryan did settle the staff down thereafter, allowing only two unearned runs and three hits across the final 2.2 frames.
The Owls improved to 13-3 overall and 6-2 against league foes with the win, as Jack Gabel and Owen Schalk combined to go 5-for-8 with six RBI and four runs scored. As it presently stands, West Lawn and Boyertown are both attempting to chase down first-place Shillington in the Berks County League standings.
Bux-Mont League
Perkiomen Post 184 12, Plumstead 2
Playing in its first game in over a week, Perkiomen’s offense looked far from rusty as six players notched multi-hit efforts. Stephen Mumford was 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBI, while Grayson Sabo tallied three hits and runs scored each in the victory. Jackson Long enjoyed a 3-for-3 day at the plate and Cole Pierce chipped in a pair of hits and runs for Post 184 (3-1 overall).
Sabo was one of three pitchers to toss scoreless outings, as he went the first two innings and struck out four to secure the victory. Long and Jake Pedrick also locked down scoreless frames in the win, as the team featuring Upper Perkiomen players gets set for a busy stretch of nine games in the next two weeks.
Plumstead fell to 1-7 with the loss, while Perkiomen remained in striking distance of both Nor-Gwyn and Quakertown, the two teams it currently trails in the Bux-Mont standings.
Region 3 (Greater Norristown League)
Whitemarsh 8, Mount Carmel 2
Mount Carmel, which draws most of its roster from Norristown High School, trailed only 2-1 through four innings before things went haywire in the later innings in Wednesday’s loss to Greater Norristown League (GNL) rival Whitemarsh. Matt Leary had two hits and an RBI to pace the Mounties’ offense, while Spencer Rosen and Andrew Mocarsky each contributed two hits and a run scored.
Rosen also drew the start on the mound for Mount Carmel (5-2-1 overall), allowing four runs on four hits while striking out four and walking four in the loss. Jake Rauscher earned the victory for Whitemarsh (4-4), pitching all seven innings while surrendering only one earned run. He struck out 11.
As it presently stands, Mount Carmel occupies second place in the GNL, trailing only league-leading Fort Washington.
Everybody Else (Region 2 – Berks County League)
Boyertown is in a good spot to earn a playoff spot next month, with the Bears posting a 10-1-1 overall record and a 5-1 mark against Berks opponents. The team has won five of its last six games, including a 5-1 victory earlier this week against Norchester. In that one, Chase Waibel impressed over 5.2 strong innings, allowing six hits and one run while striking out two and walking none. Mason Reinert knocked in two runs in the victory and Connor Houck collected two hits and a steal while recording the final five outs in relief.
Region 3 – Greater Norristown League
The Perk Valley raiders currently sport a 3-2-1 overall mark, good for third place in the GNL standings. The Raiders are in search of their first win since June 1, going 0-2-1 since then as they get set for a hopeful strong sprint to the finish line.
Valley Forge, meanwhile, has had a tougher go of things in the GNL as the Generals are still seeking their first win with an overall record of 0-6. The team that draws its players from Upper Merion High School will have two more opportunities later this week to grab that first victory with tilts against Fort Washington and Whitemarsh.
Chester County League
Last but not least, the Spring City Red Sox have posted a 7-5 overall record and sit atop the Chester County League standings at 6-2. Although Spring City dropped a non-league bout to Boyertown in its most recent game last week, the team won its prior three before that.
