The brewers at Erie Brewing Company might be a little biased when they say they have the best beer in town.

So, for this week’s Clocking In, our Jade Leah Burns found out if this was true.

Erie Brewing Company has been crafting beers since 1993, later adding their Knowledge Park location in Harborcreek Township.

Burns’ boss for the day greeted her at the front doors, and after clocking in, he immediately took her to the back of the house, where the magic happens.

“You have everything from lifting kegs to hauling freight out of here, obviously filling kegs and things like that. I don’t know if that would be your forte,” said John Streeter, director of operations at Erie Brewing Company.

Burns replied, “I’m strong.”

“No, definitely, I think more I see your creative side. I see you working with Rich, grabbing some of those ingredients and coming up with some new flavors,” said Streeter.

Head brewer Rich Britton said that’s step number one.

Crews here have been in the industry for years, and they told Burns in order to produce their one-of-a-kind recipes, you have to have a real passion for the work.

Once they make the perfect beer formula, it’s time to make it a reality.

Britton explained that it’s a science, but to put it simply — the process includes milling, boiling to create a sugar water called wort, adding hops and finally, they cool it down and send it to their cellar where they add yeast.

After that is a lengthy process of fermentation.

“After 14 days, we get most of the yeast out, we get it back down to 32 degrees, we’ll send it through here, and it’s basically whipping it around,” said Britton.

And the very last thing before it reaches the customer’s taste buds is bottling. That’s also done on-site.

Not only does the Knowledge Park location have enough room for storage and a loading dock, but they also have a brewpub, serving their award-winning craft beer and food along with self-guided tours, private rental spaces and more.

With a perfect pour and taste of their signature scotch ale, Streeter believed that Burns was a natural behind the bar.

“I came up with the strawberry lemonade sours flavor. What exactly would you name that?” asked Burns.

“With those flavors, I would call it Jade’s Best Day Ever,” replied Streeter.

“Well, there ya go! Jade’s Best Day Ever, coming to Erie Brewing Company soon,” said Burns.
