Erie City Mission to acquire new shelter location in former school
A former Catholic grade school will become a shelter for women and children following a vote in Millcreek Wednesday night.
The Erie City Mission has plans to create “The Haven” inside what used to be Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in the 1500 block of East Grandview Boulevard.

The residential shelter will be able to accommodate 70 women and children.
The township’s zoning hearing board unanimously approved a special exception, allowing a change to how the building is used.
“It’s such a great synergy to go into a school that served so many for so many years and be able to turn it into a wonderful home for women and children. We’re excited. The board is excited. I’m excited. A lot was riding on this decision tonight,” said Erie City Mission CEO Brian Johansson.
The project is expected to take 18 to 24 months and have a total price tag of about $9.5 million.
