Music, dancing, and cultural traditions filled the air in Erie as community members gathered to celebrate World Refugee Day.
The annual festival brought together refugees from countries including Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, and others to share their cultures, stories, and traditions with the community.
For many attendees, the event was also an opportunity to connect with others who have experienced similar journeys.
Vera Logvina-Sizov, owner of Sizov Copper Art, came to the United States as a refugee 37 years ago, fleeing religious persecution in the Ukraine.
“We’re happy to be here and see people who did go through the same experience,” said Logvina-Sizov. “I try to encourage everyone just to be determined, strong, and go through all difficulties, and reach their goals.”
Organizers say World Refugee Day is about more than celebrating the diverse cultures that make up Erie’s refugee community. They say the event also helps build relationships, foster understanding, and strengthen connections among neighbors from different backgrounds.
