Band will march in Philadelphia’s July 4th parade
SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (WKOW) — The Sound of Sun Prairie marching band is preparing for its trip to Philadelphia, where it will be one of three bands representing Wisconsin in the Salute to Independence Parade.
The Sound of Sun Prairie is a summer band made up of students from Sun Prairie East and West high schools.
The band was invited to the parade last year. Director Matt McVeigh said getting to be part of the celebration for America’s 250th birthday is a chance to experience history.
“We’re going to be marching right past Independence Hall, and I think that that just brings our country’s story to life for these kids in a really poignant way,” McVeigh said.
While in Philadelphia, the band will also represent the United States in an international field show competition. Drum Major Alex Reinen said she hopes to learn from both events.
“I’m just very excited to get to meet these new people that have had so many different experiences, and represent our country at this event,” Reinen said.
For some of the band’s 65 members, this will be their first time on the East Coast. Color guard member Lola Falk said developing her skills has made her more excited for the experience.
“Last year I was really stressed about shows and parades and stuff, but this year is just like, ‘wow, I know how to do this stuff,’ and now I get to do this new experience in a completely different state that I’ve never been to,” Falk said.
Members said they’re looking forward to playing in Philadelphia as well as enjoying the city’s sights, sounds and a Philly cheesesteak.
