BERKS COUNTY, Pa.- Berks County officials are warning residents of ongoing scams who fake court violations for money.
Scammers impersonate officers and call victims to tell them they missed jury duty or did not appear in court, the Berks County District Attorney said in a Facebook post.
They pressure users into paying electronically with Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, or other forms of payment, according to the post.
Officials released a list of characteristics scammers often use, such as:
The Berks County District Attorney’s Office said residents can identify a scammer since legitimate officers never call to demand payment over the phone.
Fines and other official papers are often sent through mail, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
The Berks County Sheriff’s Office said it does not contact jurors who failed to arrive nor solicit money for those who did not appear for jury duty.
If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately and do not reveal any personal or financial information.
