READING, Pa. – Authorities in Reading say two victims of a shooting at City Park are expected to survive, as police continue to investigate exactly what happened there late Monday afternoon.

Shortly after gunshots were reported in the area of City Park, the basketball courts were filled with kids and young adults playing, as well as more, sitting under the nearby pavilion watching.

One of those was a young man who goes by “Gee Gee.” He says he arrived after the gun shots.

“Stop the violence,” he said. “Put the guns down.”

Police officers and their vehicles surrounded City Park, taping off parts of it around the basketball court, following a shooting Monday afternoon.

“There’s mad cops over here,” Gee said.

City officials say it happened before 4:30 p.m. Two adults were shot and taken to Reading Hospital.

A police officer on scene told 69 News that one victim, a 21-year-old man, was shot in the chest. Another man was taken to the hospital in someone’s personal vehicle. He was shot in the neck.

“This (expletive) should not be normalized,” Gee said. “It’s crazy. Hope they get better.”

Both are expected to survive, city officials say.

Police say, according to a witness, both victims were playing basketball when shots rang out.

One officer says there were about 15 to 20 shots.

At this time, it’s not known whether the two victims were targets, but another officer tells 69 News that the basketball court was not the only place shots were fired toward; he was finding shell casings all over the place, he says.

“Yeah, it happens a lot,” Gee said.

Gee says it’s common to see police in the area, but he’s never seen a shooting at City Park.

“Oh no, no, no, this is a safe and secure spot,” he said.

Gee and many others, including city officials, tell 69 News that City Park is generally a safe area. They add that even following the shooting, and especially with all the cops surrounding the area, they all felt fine to keep playing ball.

“I mean, it already happened,” Gee said. “I don’t think it’s going to happen again.”

Authorities are actively investigating the incident and ask anyone with any information or who may have witnessed the incident is urged to contact the Reading Police Criminal Investigation Division at 610-655-6246.
