SPRING TWP., Pa. – A chicken chain has had a change of heart.
Officials with Spring Township say Raising Cane’s has withdrawn its application for a restaurant in the Kohl’s parking lot at Paper Mill Road and Meridian Boulevard.
This would have been the chain’s first location in Berks County.
In May, the Spring Township Board of Supervisors was set to conduct a public hearing related to the proposed restaurant. However, township solicitor Daniel Becker said at that time that the attorney for Raising Cane’s Restaurants LLC, asked for a continuance, which was the project’s third.
The township planning commission was initially presented with an informal sketch plan last October, proposing the construction of a 3,379-square-foot fast-food restaurant on the parking lot of the Kohl’s department store.
Raising Cane’s is known for its hand-battered, cooked-to-order chicken fingers.
The company’s founder and CEO, Todd Graves, opened his first location near Louisiana State University in 1996. It was named after Graves’ yellow Labrador retriever.
There are more than 900 restaurant locations in the U.S. None of them is in Berks County, but there is one in Lower Macungie Township in Lehigh County and another planned for Hanover Township in Lehigh County.
For the third time, the hearing for a proposed chicken finger restaurant was pushed to a later date in Spring Township.
