EASTON, Pa. – Water safety is top of mind for officials in Easton after two people drowned within a week of each other.
With a heat wave hitting this week, and two recent drownings on the Delaware River, Easton officials are launching a public safety push.
“The water looks good, as you can see behind us, and the message we’ve been putting out, but it’s very dangerous and if you’re in there without a life jacket and the current gets you, it’s slim chance you’re going to get out,” said City Councilman Frank Pintabone.
Two men, both in their 40’s and described as outdoorsmen, have drowned this month alone.
“We heard the one gentleman was fishing and he slipped, and when he went in the current grabbed him and he couldn’t get out,” said Pintabone. “It’s devastating to the families, to the community, to our first responders that are actually doing the recovery. So, it’s just not worth it. And we have other options for you to get wet.”
Councilman Frank Pintabone, along with the city, launched a new public safety video.
It features local first responders demonstrating how to properly fit a life jacket, saying what to do if you get caught in the water.
“You know, I just wanted to do something. So, talking to the mayor, he was 100% on board, and we put the video together, and we talk about the dangers of the water, how to be safe,” Pintabone said.
Pintabone hopes new warning signs being put along the boat ramps, and the video stop people before they step into the currents.
“We don’t want to keep pulling people out and the people that are watching, pedestrians. It sticks with people,” said Pintabone. “So, nobody wants to see any lives get lost.”
Officials are urging people in and around the water to please put on their life jackets.
