BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Officials are stressing fireworks safety ahead of Independence Day.
First responders from all over our region gathered at Memorial Fire Station Tuesday urging people to be responsible when it comes to staying safe on the Fourth of July. Police Chief Michelle Kott says there’s been issues with people shooting off fireworks illegally all over the city in past years.
First responders want to warn people of the dangers that can be associated with fireworks. A captain with the fire department says there are 10,000 fireworks-related injuries across the U.S. each year.
Officials are urging people across our area to check your local fireworks laws as they can be different for each municipality.
It’s illegal for people to shoot off fireworks within 150 feet of an occupied building.
Officials say all it takes is one little ember from a firework for a large fire to start.
“The Fourth of July is a time for family gatherings, cookouts, fireworks and making memories with loved ones. It should never be a time marked by tragedy that could’ve been prevented,” Kott said.
Officials are also reminding people that using fireworks while under the influence is illegal.
