Emergency crews, hazmat teams respond Tuesday afternoon as officials assess derailed freight cars; investigation underway
Emergency crews from across Bucks County are responding Tuesday afternoon after a CSX freight train derailed in Bensalem Township on the NY Short Line, prompting authorities to recommend that nearby residents shelter in place while hazardous materials specialists evaluate the scene.
Multiple freight cars are off the tracks as firefighters, police and specialized hazardous materials teams converged on the derailment site. Officials have not yet reported any injuries, and the cause of the derailment has not been determined.
Emergency dispatch reports stated as many as 40 cars were part of the total freight train, with two of them HAZMAT-related. At least a dozen cars are scattered on the railway.
The incident is between Byberry Road and Neshaminy Falls.
According to emergency reports, at least two crew members are on board.
Authorities urged residents in the immediate vicinity to remain indoors as a precaution while emergency responders determine whether any railcars contain hazardous materials or present other safety concerns.
As of Tuesday afternoon, officials had not announced any evacuations or confirmed the contents of the derailed cars. The conditions of the crew members is unknown.
The derailment remains under investigation, with railroad officials expected to work alongside local, state and federal agencies.
