SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Families can look forward to this holiday weekend in Scranton: Scrantastic returns to the Courthouse Square Friday with live music, family activities, and a big fireworks finale. 28/22 News Reporter Connor Coar shows us what’s planned and what makes this year’s celebration different.
Go big or go home: That’s the sentiment for county leaders to kick off America’s 250th birthday weekend.
Scrantastic will begin at 4:00 p.m. Friday night and end with the fireworks display. To celebrate America’s semiquincentennial birthday, leaders say this will be the biggest fireworks show in Scranton.
The free event will have entertainment, music, food, children’s activities, and fireworks.
Lackawanna County commissioners announced country artist Shane and NEPA’s Philharmonic will be performing this year.

The hard work planning this event is worth it when everyone comes out to Courthouse Square.
“What I’m most excited about is just seeing other people enjoying themselves. We put a lot of effort into this every year through our sponsors and the commissioners, so when you get to that moment, and you see people enjoying things, especially these other things they might not get to see for free, it’s just really kind of warms your heart,” Lackawanna County Director of Arts and Culture Maureen McGuigan said.
If rain does become a factor Friday night, the philharmonic will still perform at the Scranton Cultural Center. The fireworks show will be rescheduled to next Saturday, July 11.
