A Dunmore man attempted to leave the scene after he hit a parked car on Sunday, police said.
Dunmore police responded to Shoemaker Street at about 5:15 p.m. for the report of a crash. A witness told officers she had been sitting in her house when she heard a loud bang. When she went outside she spotted a Toyota Highlander had struck a parked car and was disabled.
A man, later identified as Peter Mataloni, 30, of Meade Street, was seated in the driver’s seat attempting to drive away despite the condition of his vehicle, the witness said.
When the witness approached Mataloni in the driver’s seat, he smelled strongly of alcohol and said, “I’m just really having a bad day,” according to the complaint.
The witness handed over the keys to police, saying of Mataloni, “He is extremely intoxicated.”
When officers interviewed Mataloni, he denied he had been drinking. He was unable to satisfactorily complete a field sobriety test.
Officers noted Mataloni was a participant in the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program, a pretrial diversion program.
He is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol as a participant in a diversionary program and driving under the influence.
He remains at Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $150,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 11 a.m. on July 9 before District Judge Paul Keeler.
