Lackawanna County Housing Authority asked a judge to allow it to join a lawsuit to stop a data center proposal adjacent to an authority development

ARCHBALD, Pa. — Lackawanna County wants to enter the fight against data centers in Archbald.

Six data center campuses, including dozens of buildings, are proposed in Archbald. One of those proposed campuses borders a Lackawanna County Housing Authority complex on Gibson Street in the borough.

The housing authority last week wants a judge to allow them to step into an ongoing lawsuit brought by an Archbald resident that seeks to uphold borough council’s decision to reject a data center developer’s proposal.

The housing authority said that it has legal standing in the lawsuit because the proposed data center campus could impact the residents’ quality of life by increasing noise, traffic, lighting and demand on the water and sewer utilities.

Lackawanna County Commissioner Bill Gaughan, who has advocated for the county to use its resources to push back against data centers, applauded the move from the housing authority.

“It really has no business being in the spot where they want to put it,” Gaughan said. “So, I’m thrilled that the housing authority has joined in the legal fight.”

A judge has not yet ruled.
