A Northampton County father has been charged with third-degree murder and other offenses in the death of his 14-month-old daughter, who died after she was left in a hot car last month in Lower Nazareth Township.

Daniel Moist, 37, was arraigned Thursday morning on charges of third-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, endangering child welfare and a misdemeanor of recklessly endangering another person. Moist remains free on $500,000 unsecured bail.

The girl was found dead the afternoon of June 11 in a car inside of a lot in the 4800 block of Hanoverville Road.

A criminal complaint states Moist dropped his 7-year-old daughter off at a sports camp that morning, and was supposed to take the 14-month-old to a daycare center in Easton. He takes her there four days a week, and he is the person who regularly drops her off there, Colonial Regional Police said.

He did not go to the daycare that day, but he did stop at a gas station before going to his work in Bethlehem Township, court documents state. He got to work just before 10 a.m., and briefly returned to his car at around 2:30 p.m., according to authorities. He then returned to his office and got back to the car at 4 p.m., after the girl’s mother called him, and found the girl dead, court documents state.

He began driving to a nearby hospital and called 911 on the way; dispatchers told him to stop to meet first responders, and and he pulled into the parking lot of ID Logistics on Hanoverville Road, police said.

Investigators took a blood draw from Moist and found he had marijuana in his system, and authorities said he purchased THC vaping devices in Phillipsburg days earlier.

DA Stephen Baratta is holding a news conference at 1 p.m. Thursday to announce updated information in the case.

Baratta told reporters at the scene that night the girl was found that she was in a car that belonged to her father, and she had been in the car for some time, according to reports.

The National Weather Service recorded a high of 93 that day, marking the warmest day so far that month.
