ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Jon Irons is stepping down from his position at the Lehigh County Board of Commissioners.
On Wednesday, Irons published an open letter about his resignation ahead of a planned family move to Atlanta for new job opportunities.
Irons wrote that he would end his third year in office on July 9.
He was initially elected to the board of commissioners in 2023 and focused on increasing house affordability and ending mass incarceration.
Irons supported and sponsored grants that decreased crime, food insecurity and poverty, according to a press release.
“While I wish that I had more time to work on improving the lives of county residents, I am proud of the work that I was able to accomplish alongside community organizers and my colleagues on the board,” Irons wrote.
Lehigh County Executive Josh Siegel made a statement on Irons’ resignation, saying he has been a powerful voice of conscience on the board with a “keen sense of justice and boundless compassion.”
“He understands government’s obligation to serve as a bulwark against life’s hardships, especially for the struggling and underprivileged,” Siegel said.
The board of commissioners said it will begin asking for applications and appoint a new commissioner to complete Irons’ term, which runs through 2027.
