Thousands of people gathered along Erie’s Bayfront Friday evening to celebrate Independence Day during the annual Lights Over Lake Erie fireworks show.
The celebration, made possible through a partnership between the City of Erie and the Port Authority, drew families, friends, and visitors who lined the waterfront to watch fireworks light up the night sky.
This year’s event also helped mark America 250, the nationwide commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As communities across the country begin recognizing the historic milestone, Erie’s waterfront celebration gave residents a chance to honor the nation’s history while celebrating local traditions.
For many in attendance, the Fourth of July is about more than the fireworks.
“The Fourth of July is amazing, you know, the fireworks, the food, and just learning the history behind it, too,” said Casey Campanelli.
For Victoria Campanelli, the holiday is also an opportunity to reconnect with the people who matter most.
“Mostly just getting together with your family that you haven’t seen in a long time, and just really getting to know one another again,” Victoria Campanelli said.
The annual Lights Over Lake Erie fireworks show remains one of Erie’s signature Independence Day traditions, bringing thousands to the Bayfront each year to celebrate with fireworks, family, and a shared sense of community.
Casey and Victoria shared one final message with everyone celebrating the holiday:
