PPL Electric Utilities said Sunday it has restored power to more than 116,700 customers after severe weather swept through eastern and central Pennsylvania over the weekend, while more than 115,000 customers are currently left without electricity across the entirety of the company’s coverage.
PPL said crews and field personnel continue working around the clock to repair damage and restore service. The company has brought in additional resources through mutual-assistance agreements and from other PPL Corporation utilities.
According to PPL Electric, workers are assessing damage, clearing downed trees and limbs, and repairing equipment damaged by heavy rain and wind gusts that reached up to 60 mph.
“Crews continue to work around the clock as safely and quickly as possible,” Christine Martin, president of PPL Electric Utilities, said in a statement issued to FOX43. “We understand that being without power is never easy, and we’ll continue to work nonstop until every customer is restored.”
The company said it prepared for the storms by securing additional crews and personnel as part of its emergency response operations. More than 1,000 employees and contractors, including field and support staff, are involved in restoration efforts across the utility’s service territory.
Additional severe weather is forecast for late Sunday, with wind gusts of up to 65 mph possible, according to the company. PPL Electric said the storms could cause additional outages and bring hail, widespread rainfall and localized flooding through Monday.
The utility company said estimated restoration times will continue to be updated on its outage map as crews make progress. Because of the extent of the damage, PPL Electric expects restoration efforts to take multiple days.
The company urged residents to stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately to PPL Electric or local emergency agencies. Officials said all downed wires should be treated as energized.
PPL Electric also said customers who remain without power because of the storms may purchase up to three gallons of water and three 10-pound bags of ice per day from local vendors and receive reimbursement through a bill credit by submitting itemized receipts and account information to the utility.
PPL Electric Utilities serves about 1.5 million homes and businesses in eastern and central Pennsylvania.
