A runner who made his way through Erie during the winter has now completed a journey few people in history can claim.
On July 4, Noah Coughlan crossed the finish line on the beaches of Waikiki, Hawaii, completing a remarkable run through all 50 states and becoming just the third person ever to accomplish the feat on foot.
For Coughlan, Independence Day carried special significance this year. While the nation celebrated its 250th anniversary, the 42-year-old endurance athlete celebrated the end of a journey that began in October 2025 and spanned 260 days, 5,416 miles and every state in the country.
Many Erie residents may remember Coughlan from January, when he passed through the region during some of the harshest winter conditions of his trek. Battling lake-effect snow and frigid temperatures, he continued pushing forward despite the challenges presented by northwestern Pennsylvania’s winter weather.
The cross-country journey tested Coughlan’s endurance in a variety of climates and terrains. From snowy roads in the Northeast to the heat and humidity of tropical Hawaii, he faced months of physical and mental challenges while making his way across the nation.
His arrival in Waikiki on July 4 marked the conclusion of a goal that required nearly nine months of continuous running and travel. The accomplishment places him in rare company, as only two other people have previously completed a run through all 50 states.
After 5,416 miles, countless hours on the road and 260 days of running, Coughlan’s cross-country adventure ended where history was made on the shores of Hawaii, on America’s Independence Day.
