A reward is being offered after a masque in Northeast Philadelphia was damaged in, what officials called, an “apparent arson attack” that happened on Sunday.

The Philadelphia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, also known as CAIR-Philadelphia, has announced a $2,500 reward being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction after, officials said, the Northeast Philadelphia Islamic Center, located along the 1400 Tyson Avenue, was, allegedly, targeted in an arson attack that happened at about 2 a.m. on Sunday.

Also, in a statement on the incident, officials with CAIR-Philadelphia called on law enforcement officials to investigate the incident to determine whether it was motivated by religious bias or hate.

“Our mosque is more than a place of worship. It is a welcoming community center that has served families, neighbors, and people of all backgrounds for many years,” said Masukul Islam Khan, President of Northeast Philadelphia Islamic Center, in a statement on the incident. “Any act of violence or hatred directed at a house of worship is an attack on the values of safety, religious freedom, and unity that our city cherishes.”

CAIR-Philadelphia also shared footage of the damage that was done by the incident.

In an online fundraising page that CAIR-Philadelphia has shared as the Islamic center seeks funds to restore the mosque following the incident, officials said that surveillance footage appears to show a man dressed in all black, with a Nike hoodie on, outside the masjid — a term for a Muslim place of worship — on the evening of the attack.

At that time, officials said, “a masked individual lit something in a bag and threw it inside our masjid and left within seconds. This is clearly visible in our security cameras,” officials said. “The device that was thrown inside ignited a fire within a few seconds and the front of the masjid caught on fire.”

No one was injured in this incident, but officials said “significant damage” was done to the mosque.

“An attack on any house of worship is an attack on the constitutional promise of religious freedom that belongs to every American. It’s additionally saddening that this attack came just as the nation commemorated the 250th year of its founding,” said Ahmet Tekelioglu, Executive Director of CAIR-Philadelphia in a statement. “We urge law enforcement to conduct a comprehensive investigation into this apparent arson attempt, including the possibility that it was motivated by anti-Muslim bias. Every community deserves to gather in prayer without fear of intimidation or violence. We stand in full solidarity with the leadership and congregants of Northeast Philadelphia Islamic Center and remain committed to supporting them as they recover from this disturbing incident.”

Also, in a statement released following the incident, Pa. Congressman Brendan F. Boyle (D-2nd dist.) said he was “deeply disturbed” by the recent attack.

“I am deeply disturbed by the apparent arson at the Northeast Philadelphia Islamic Center. Houses of worship must be places of peace and safety, not targets for violence or intimidation,” Boyle said in a statement. “I am grateful that no one was injured, but the fear caused by this attack is very real. I urge anyone with information to come forward immediately. Our Muslim community deserves our full support.”
