SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — World Cup Scranton opened its new downtown cheerleading facility Monday with a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony at the former Watres Armory on Adams Avenue.

The organization moved from its former location in Olyphant into the 12,000-square-foot space, giving the cheerleading and tumbling program space for two spring floors, a dead mat for high school and college athletes, and greatly expanded room for athletes, families and community programming.

Amy Hughes, owner of World Cup Scranton, said the move opens the door for new teams, clinics and community programming.

“This facility will offer us a little bit more space and the ability to do different things. We’re able to add additional teams this coming year, and we’ll have a CheerABILITIES team coming back to our program. We’ll be able to offer different clinics and do more with the community because of the bigger space,” said Hughes.

The open house gave families, athletes, community members and local officials a chance to tour the new facility, meet coaches and see athletes during the event.

Hughes said World Cup Scranton offers cheerleading, tumbling, novice and all-star cheerleading, and training for recreation and high school programs. The facility also hosts camps, clinics and choreography programs.

World Cup All Stars was established in 1994 and has locations in New Jersey, Connecticut, Ohio, Louisiana and Maryland, in addition to Scranton.
