Crews clean up ‘hazardous materials’ from overturned tractor-trailer in Sharpsburg

NOW. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US? I MEAN, HONESTLY, LILY, THIS IS JUST A MESS. THEY ARE WORKING TO CLEAN IT UP, BUT THEY ARE EXPECTING THE 62ND STREET BRIDGE TO BE CLOSED THROUGH RUSH HOUR, CAUSING JUST A MASSIVE TRAFFIC HEADACHE. I DO WANT TO GET OUT OF THE WAY SO YOU CAN TAKE A LIVE LOOK AT THE SCENE. NOW THAT THE SUN IS UP, YOU CAN GET A BETTER LOOK AT THIS WHOLE SITUATION. SO YOU CAN SEE THAT TRACTOR TRAILER IS STILL ON ITS SIDE THIS MORNING. SO WHENEVER I WAS SPEAKING WITH SOME OFFICIALS HERE ON SCENE, THEY SAID WHAT THEY HAVE TO DO RIGHT NOW IS FLIP THAT TRACTOR TRAILER BACK UP, CLEAR IT OUT, AND THEN TOW IT OFF. NOW, WHENEVER WE’RE TALKING ABOUT THIS HAZMAT SITUATION, THAT TRAILER WAS CARRYING PEROXIDE SO THAT PEROXIDE SPILLED ON THE BRIDGE, THEY HAD TO USE SODA ASH TO THEN BASICALLY NEUTRALIZE THAT AND MAKE SURE THAT IT DIDN’T GET IN THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM. SO THAT IS WHERE THAT ALL HAPPENED. NOW WE’RE JUST IN THIS CLEANUP PROCESS HERE. SO AGAIN, GOING TO BE A LENGTHY PROCESS. WE’RE GOING TO KEEP YOU UPDATED ON ALL OF THAT. The 62nd Street Bridge is still closed in both directions after a tractor-trailer rolled over Monday night.Officials on the scene told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 that the truck was carrying peroxide. First responders worked for hours to clean up the hazardous material. They used soda ash to neutralize the peroxide.According to Allegheny County Emergency Services, Hazmat units were cleared by 5 a.m. The Cherry City Volunteer Fire Department said the bridge will remain closed while crews clean up. Officials said the driver hit the barrier and the trailer rolled over. No one was injured.
