Two Reading women were seriously injured in a two-vehicle, crossover collision on the Penn Street Bridge, West Reading police said Tuesday.
The crash happened just after 7:30 p.m. Monday in the eastbound lanes of Penn Avenue near the western foot of the bridge in West Reading.
According to police:
The women, ages 20 and 22, were traveling east when a westbound vehicle went over the raised median barrier and struck their vehicle.
Both women needed to be cut out of the wreckage by firefighters. They were taken by ambulance to Reading Hospital, where police said their conditions were reported to be seriously but stable. Police withheld their names.
The driver of the vehicle that hopped the median bailed from the striking vehicle and ran off. Police believe they know the identity of the hit-and-run suspect.
A state police crash reconstruction team was called in to assist borough police in the investigation, which is ongoing.
Eastbound Penn Avenue was closed in West Reading from the Second Avenue intersection for about two hours while police reconstructed the crash.
