Sunday was the last day to see one-of-a-kind historical military planes right here in Erie.

The Maid in the Shade, a B-25 Mitchell, and Sentimental Journey, a B-17 Flying Fortress, made their way to the Erie International Airport last week for the Flying Legends of Victory Warbird Tour.

The bombers were active during World War II, and now that history is flying across the country for a chance to see them up close and even take a ride in them.

Organizers said getting the chance to experience what it’s like to ride in these flying museums serves as a reminder of our country’s history.

“It’s an opportunity for us to both educate folks on these World War II airplanes, and also to honor the men and women who served back then, but also to honor the men and women who are serving our country now,” said Marty Post, the ground coordinator for the Commemorative Air Force.

The planes are continuing their tour and headed to western New York.
