YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) – There were 188 violations of the law during this year’s Operation Safe Stop, according to the Shapiro Administration, which released the numbers on Monday.
“Just one incident of passing a stopped school bus is too many, and this many violations in just one day is unacceptable,” PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll said. “This is just a snapshot.”
The numbers, which are from violations recorded one day out of the year, are released by participating school districts, including the West Shore. The district has even gone a step further by permanently installing side stop arm cameras on its buses.
It had 22 potential violations in the first week alone, according to Superintendent Dr. Todd Stoltz.
“The amount of incidents that were being recorded as potential violations was shocking to me,” Stoltz said. “The consequences are very dire.”
State law requires drivers approaching a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm activated to stop at least 10 feet from the bus. If they don’t, they could face a $300 fine.
